Giving Is The Ultimate Secret To Success

The most common definition of success for most people is being able to take or do whatever you want, whenever you want. Successful people know how to make things happen. But not so many of us know that giving is the ultimate secret to success. How can this happen? How do you make yourself successful by taking a portion of what’s yours and giving it to someone else?

To get the value of joy you must have someone to divide it with Mark Twain Quotes About Giving

One sunny day, my sister was doing her weekly laundry and was hanging wet clothes outside to dry. She noticed an old woman stopped in front of the apartment, looked at her, and then walked towards her. The old woman was wearing an old ashy shirt, gray pants, slippers, and an umbrella. She wasn’t alone – she was with a much younger woman following her as they walk slowly towards my sister.

The old woman then said, “Maayong buntag Maam. Pwede mang-limos bisan gamay lang maam?” (Good morning Maam. Can you spare me some change?)

My sister quickly realizes the old woman is a beggar.

My sister responded with, “Asa diay imong mga anak, nay? Ngano mang limos manka?” (Where are your children, nay? Why are you begging for change?)

The old woman answered, “Ay, naminyo na man sila Maam. Ako nalang isa.” (They are all married, Maam. I am now on my own.)

My sister was going to ask her another question but her husband interrupted and handed over 20 pesos to the old lady. She thanked my brother in law and went on her way.

As soon as the old lady left, my sister and her husband went on a very heated discussion. Her husband accused her of being too frugal, selfish and rude. He questioned her character because she never thought of helping the old woman by giving her some change, instead, she asked her personal questions about her children. My sister, on the other hand, felt insulted. She didn’t feel the need to help the old woman out because she thinks she’s being scammed. She said the beggar was with a much younger woman, young enough to be her daughter (she probably is) so she couldn’t understand why a person should help someone like her.

I listened as they argued and it made me realized, you could be married for 50 years but you can never change each other’s perspective in life. Both of them want to make a point – I know many of us have argued about the same topic as well.

I shared this story with you because, at the end of this article, it will help me explain why giving is the ultimate secret to success. I gathered three main points below to further explain my stand on this matter.

Giving Builds Character

We think when we give something, it always needs to be “tangible”. Something you can touch such as money, food, water, clothes, shelter, etch. Very few of us never realize that the time, effort, and listening to someone else’s struggles is already an act of giving. In fact, these are even more special because these are the things you can never earn or get back. Giving is the ultimate secret to success because it shows people who you really are.

Would an investor spend their money on a business owner whose character is known for taking advantage of people? Would you team up with a business partner whose character is known for selfishly taking all the credits he didn’t deserve? Would you hope to have a successful marriage with someone whose character is known for putting herself/himself first, before anybody else?

You open up much bigger opportunities when your character is in the right place. Giving is the ultimate secret to success because it is the best attitude people will first notice about you.

Giving Helps You Save Money (Literally)

I know some of my readers are from the U.S so this part here is for all of you. Did you know that when you donate to qualified charities, you can reduce your taxable income and lower your tax bill? Although there are provisions that you need to watch out for such as itemizing your tax deductions if the total of all your itemized deductions exceeds the amount of the standard deduction you would receive for your filing status.

Ah, I’m not a tax professional sorry but I have been writing articles related to taxes for almost a year now so I know a little about this. If you look further into this or if you ask the help of a tax professional, you’ll find out how much money you can save by making donations. Big Celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Ellen Degeneres, Oprah and more benefited from their donations and have helped greatly cut their tax liability. If this doesn’t help define my stand on why giving is the ultimate secret to success, I don’t know what is.

Giving Strengthens Your Faith

I had a distant cousin who told me she once had to go to Church with only 50 pesos in her wallet – that was her last money. She was waiting for her sister from abroad to send her money for her school allowance and she doesn’t really know until when she’s going to wait. For a moment there, her spirit and her mind were arguing. But she knew deep within her heart she wants to give – giving makes her happy. So she dropped her last 50 pesos to the offering plate, worried about tomorrow but spiritually fulfilled – her faith tells her God will provide.

Sure enough, as soon as she got back to her apartment, her other sister called her and asked if she needs some money. She was surprised but knew it was God’s hands doing the work. Such a beautiful testimony about giving and faith.

When we give sacrificially, above and beyond what is comfortable and easy, our faith in God to provide for us and our family is strengthened. Ecclesiastes 11:1 says, “Ship your grain across the sea; after many days you may receive a return.”

We are also reminded to give cheerfully according to 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

The act of letting go of money does something special within us: it destroys greed and allows generosity to grow. Giving is the ultimate secret to success because we know we can expect blessings to fall from the heavens when we give.

Bottomline

Let’s go back to the story I shared above. I know there are people like my sister who thinks not everyone deserves help and I agree. You definitely don’t want to tolerate lazy people, right? However, I also believe that we all go through hard times. You may see a beggar who looks perfectly healthy (from the outside) and can easily find a job if he really wants to but behind his appearance, there may be a tragic story he’s trying to escape from that you know nothing about. So now the question is, how do you know if someone really deserves help? The answer to that question is: you can’t. Most of the time, you will never know who deserves help and who doesn’t.

Giving is the ultimate secret to success but it only works if it is done sincerely AND if you know how to do it right. See a beggar but you’re worried about his intentions with the money? Politely ask him what he’s going to do with it. Want to donate to a charity? Don’t think about money right away – volunteering is already valuable. Want to help a sick friend but you don’t have the money now? Your sincere prayers can move mountains. The keywords here are “sincerity” and “willingness.” Look at giving from a different perspective. A study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia and Harvard Business School said, “spending money on others promotes happiness more than spending money on oneself.” The reason why a person should help is not only to make other people happy but to make himself happy first and foremost.

  1. People with short term thinking cannot see the big picture and realize that grabbing can only give them a short term advantage but it will eventually lead to ultimate failure. Tama naman ang sinabi ni Haring Salomon: “maghasik ka at ang inihasik mo ay babalik sa iyo”. Kung minsan mahirap malaman kung kailan ito babalik pero tiyak na babalik 100fold.
